About Manchester Metropolitan University
The University with a history of 150 years and having a characteristic combination of contemporary and traditional culture sets the Manchester Metropolitan University apart from the other Universities of United Kingdom.
Manchester Metropolitan University was accorded the university status in 1992. The University is a part of the campus that called for the highest among the higher education delivering universities.
This is one of the largest and most extensive centers of education in Europe. Speaking of the heritage of the University, the Manchester Metropolitan University was a Polytechnic college when it was established in 1970, but later in 1992, it got the status of a university.
The University boasts of a rich heritage and history to its several rival institutions. The initial university was set up as Manchester Mechanics Institution in 1838, and slowly, it was evolved as a centre of Art, Design and Technology.
L.S. Lowry, the painter, who attended the school of art during the years after World War I was an alumni of the University. In the later years, the School of Commerce was founded in 1889, the School of Education in 1878 and School of Domestic was also founded in 1880.
A few years later, in 1911, the colleges at Crewe, Didsbury, Aldager and the Trades College were also added along with Hollings College. Today, in terms of the applications concerned, Manchester Metropolitan University ranks third in popularity in the United Kingdom.
The University strives to follow the vision of its Vice-Chancellor, which is the soul motto of the University, to engage itself into the major agenda of development and change simultaneously.
The agenda regarding change is very ambitious and has a wide range of implementations, whereas the development agenda revolves around various areas, such as academics, staffing, physical infra projects and support.
This reveals that their prime focus is sustainability, recognition, research funding, developing society, etc. The University produces excellent students who excel in their respective fields of education, thus adding to the reputation of their education institute.
The University is based at around seven campuses, including five in the city of Manchester and two at Crewe and Alsager, which are collectively known to be MMU Cheshire. The campuses of central Manchester form part of the largest campus of higher education in the United Kingdom. The University campus offers all the facilities for the students and staff, including the accommodation.
The Manchester Metropolitan University is also a major contributor of the economy in the North West Province, catering to 34,000 students, employing 4,300 staff members and generating £236 million as income. The University’s impact on the economy of the region is increasing and currently amounts to £690 million.
As 70 percent graduates from the University serve the North West, this is also a pride for the University. They are in partnerships with different region agencies - Manchester Knowledge Capital, Centre for Urban Education, Science Learning Center North West, Corridor Manchester and Smart City Futures.
